Hollow: Halloween Digital Art for the Mash-It.io Spookyversary
A pumpkin is emptied out so a light can go inside. This piece does the same thing with a whole night.
Hollow is antiquepeanut‘s entry for the Spookyversary, the Halloween event on Mash-It.io, and it is a piece of Halloween digital art built around one idea: what fills a space once it has been cleared out.
The Glass Head
The character’s head is a glass dome, and inside it is a graveyard on a full-moon night. The moon wears a witch hat and has X eyes and a wide grin. Bats cross the sky, a small ghost stands among the stones, and a pumpkin sits low in the scene. Two large black eyes are set on the front of the glass.
Green fire comes out of the mouth and circles the head like a ring. It is the only movement in a figure that otherwise stands still.
The Body and the Ink
Below the head, the body is dark purple, outlined in cold cyan light, with a stitched face and a toothy grin. It stands in a pool of black ink. The ink has small eyes in it, scattered across the surface, all looking out.
The Room Behind It
The background is an antique room in black and white, with furniture and a doorway. It has been broken into blocks of glitch, with bands of color running through it and red paint laid across the surface. The room is recognizable and not stable. It looks like a place that was left closed for a reason.
Why It Reads the Way It Does
Halloween imagery usually shows the thing that frightens you. Hollow shows the container. The head holds a complete night, the figure is calm about it, and the room around it is the part that is coming apart. The title can be read as emptiness, and it can also be read as space made on purpose.
The PEEPING CULTURE clothing line runs separately from this work. It is monochrome and quiet, close to the opposite of a piece like this one.
